Zimmer Biomet to Boost Indian Tech Presence with 500 New Hires

Zimmer Biomet, a leading medical device manufacturer, has announced plans to hire 500 employees over the next three years for its newly established technology center in Bengaluru, India. This move marks a significant expansion of the company's presence in the country, as it seeks to enhance its technological capabilities and innovation in the medical devices sector.

Focus on Technology and Innovation

The hiring initiative will primarily target roles in software engineering, product design, research and development, as well as support functions like quality control, regulatory compliance, and finance. According to Jehanzeb Noor, the company's Chief Strategy, Business Development, Innovation, and Transformation Officer, two-thirds of the new positions will be technology-focused, underscoring the company's commitment to leveraging advanced tech solutions in its operations.

Zimmer Biomet's expansion aligns with India's growing status as a hub for global capability centers. Companies such as Novo Nordisk, AstraZeneca, and Eli Lilly have already established significant operations in India, focusing on research and development, clinical data analysis, and technology. The country's global capability centers are projected to generate $84 billion in revenue by the end of the 2026 fiscal year, according to consultancy ANSR.

Enhancing AI and Robotics Capabilities

The Bengaluru center will prioritize advancements in artificial intelligence, particularly in areas like robotics and surgical planning. Shaun Braun, Zimmer Biomet's Chief Information and Technology Officer, emphasized the importance of integrating AI to drive innovation and improve patient care. The company aims to expedite the development of AI applications across its product lines, enhancing the capabilities of orthopedic implants and surgical devices.

Zimmer Biomet's strategic push into AI and robotics is expected to bolster its market position in key regions such as the United States, Europe, and Japan, where it primarily operates. The company is renowned for its orthopedic implants used in knee, hip, and shoulder replacements, as well as its surgical and robotic devices tailored for musculoskeletal conditions.

While the current hiring target is 500 employees, Noor indicated that the company is open to further expanding its workforce in India, potentially increasing headcount to thousands as demand grows.
