WHO Addresses Bundibugyo Virus Outbreak in DRC at Emergency Meeting

WHO's Director-General highlights urgent measures needed to combat the Bundibugyo virus in the DRC.
The World Health Organization (WHO) convened an emergency meeting on August 18, 2026, to address the Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the critical need for immediate and coordinated action to contain the virus.
Urgency in Response Measures
Dr. Tedros underscored that the current outbreak requires a heightened level of international collaboration. He pointed out that the virus, which causes a form of Ebola, poses significant risks to public health and demands a swift response to prevent further spread.
"The situation in the DRC is concerning, and we must act decisively," Dr. Tedros stated. He urged member states and international partners to contribute resources and expertise to bolster the response efforts in affected areas.
Current Status and Challenges
The Bundibugyo virus has been reported in several regions within the DRC, with cases continuing to rise. The WHO Director-General highlighted the challenges in accessing remote areas and the need for enhanced surveillance and monitoring systems. "We are working closely with the DRC government and local health authorities to ensure that healthcare workers have the necessary tools and support," he added.
Dr. Tedros also noted the importance of community engagement, stating that "local populations must be involved in the response efforts to ensure that interventions are culturally sensitive and effective."
Global Coordination and Support
In his remarks, Dr. Tedros called for increased international support, including financial contributions and technical assistance. He acknowledged the efforts of healthcare workers on the ground, who are risking their lives to manage the outbreak.
The WHO is coordinating with various health organizations and NGOs to streamline efforts and minimize duplication of resources. Dr. Tedros emphasized that "a unified approach is essential to stop the virus from spreading to neighboring countries."
Long-term Strategies
Beyond the immediate response, the WHO Director-General highlighted the importance of strengthening health systems in the DRC to better handle future outbreaks. He pointed to the need for sustainable infrastructure and training programs for local healthcare providers.
As the meeting concluded, Dr. Tedros reaffirmed WHO's commitment to supporting the DRC through this public health crisis. He urged all stakeholders to remain vigilant and proactive in their efforts to combat the Bundibugyo virus outbreak.
