Unvaccinated Woman's Measles Death Highlights Health Risks in Pennsylvania
A Pennsylvania woman's death from measles underscores the dangers for those with underlying health conditions amid a state outbreak.
A 40-year-old woman from Pennsylvania has died from measles, marking the third such fatality in the state amid a growing outbreak. The woman, who was unvaccinated, also suffered from asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), according to the Jefferson County coroner's office.
Chief Deputy Coroner Jason Stiver confirmed that the woman had an active measles infection at the time of her death, revealed by a nasal swab test. She was pronounced dead at her home on Saturday morning, and it was noted that she had been on oxygen continuously due to her respiratory conditions.
Measles Outbreak Intensifies
The woman's death comes as Pennsylvania grapples with a significant measles outbreak, with 693 cases confirmed this year, including 99 in just the past week. Two infants also died last month due to measles-related complications, according to the Lancaster County coroner's office. One of the infants died shortly after birth when their mother, infected with measles, went into premature labor.
Health officials warn that the current number of confirmed cases might be an understatement. Historically, measles infections result in 1 to 2 deaths per 1,000 cases. The recent fatalities suggest the outbreak could be more extensive, possibly involving up to 3,000 cases, as many individuals may not have been tested.
Health Officials and Response
The Pennsylvania Department of Health has informed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about the outbreak, although the CDC has yet to formally acknowledge the deaths. A CDC spokesperson confirmed that Pennsylvania had not requested federal assistance for managing the outbreak.
Despite the absence of a formal request for CDC intervention, the Pennsylvania Health Department maintains regular communication with CDC staff, evaluating the need for additional support as the situation evolves.
This outbreak is part of the largest measles resurgence in the United States since 1991, with 3,294 cases confirmed nationwide this year. In addition to the Pennsylvania deaths, three other fatalities occurred in 2025 due to measles complications, including one adult in New Mexico and two young girls in Texas.
The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective, preventing 97% of measles infections. Health experts emphasize the importance of vaccination, especially for vulnerable populations, to prevent severe outcomes.
