These changes, though small, are associated with higher risks of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Increased Cardiovascular Risks

Over a follow-up period of up to 10 years, the highest exposure group had a 29% increased risk of heart failure, a 24% higher risk of heart attack, a 33% elevated risk of stroke, and a 26% increased risk of cardiovascular death compared to those with minimal light exposure.

Dr. Qi noted that nighttime light might disrupt sleep and affect the body's circadian rhythm, potentially leading to these cardiovascular issues. Kristen Knutson, a sleep medicine expert at Northwestern University, explained that light can confuse the body's internal clock, impacting sleep, hormones, and inflammation.

Study Limitations and Considerations

The study's limitations include the short duration of light monitoring and the lack of data on light spectrum differences. Additionally, the predominantly white participant group may limit the applicability of findings to other racial groups.
