Safdarjung Hospital and SAI have signed an MoU to improve healthcare for athletes, focusing on injury management and sports medicine.

The Sports Injury Centre at Safdarjung Hospital and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) have formalized a partnership to elevate healthcare services for athletes across the country. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed to focus on sports medicine, injury management, and research, with the signing attended by Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava and Sports Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao.

Focus on Comprehensive Athlete Healthcare

This collaboration aims to create a cohesive healthcare framework for athletes by integrating the clinical expertise from Safdarjung's Sports Injury Centre with SAI's extensive national support network. The health ministry emphasized that the partnership will prioritize injury prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. There will also be a strong focus on sports science to help athletes maintain peak performance levels.

In addition to healthcare services, the MoU outlines plans for joint research initiatives. These efforts will aim to develop innovative treatment protocols, enhance injury prevention strategies, and promote evidence-based sports medicine practices. The collaboration is expected to contribute significantly to both medical education and capacity building in the field of sports medicine.

Strategic Steps for Enhanced Sports Medicine

Union Health Secretary Srivastava highlighted the importance of the agreement, describing it as a key step in supporting India's sports ambitions. She assured that the Health Ministry is committed to supporting this long-term partnership and is examining ways to expand sports medicine facilities nationwide. This includes strengthening postgraduate education in sports medicine to increase the number of specialists in the field.

Srivastava also mentioned plans to involve institutions like NIMHANS to support athletes with specialized healthcare needs beyond orthopaedic issues. The development of sports medicine facilities at newer AIIMS institutions is also on the agenda, with a focus on prioritizing athlete healthcare services.

Developing Indigenous Research and Protocols

Sports Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao underscored the necessity of strengthening indigenous research in sports medicine and sports science. He pointed out that many existing protocols are based on Western data, which may not be suitable for Indian athletes due to physiological differences. Rao advocated for the generation of India-specific scientific evidence and the development of indigenous protocols for athlete performance, injury prevention, and rehabilitation.

Rao proposed linking SAI's Centres of Excellence with nearby medical colleges to facilitate specialized medical support and research. This initiative is seen as a critical step in strengthening research, capacity building, and evidence-based sports medicine for the long-term benefit of Indian athletes.
