PGI Surpasses Global Pediatric Glaucoma Leader in Patient Care

The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) in Chandigarh has emerged as the global leader in pediatric glaucoma treatment, surpassing the Samuel and Ethel Balkan International Pediatric Glaucoma Center at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. PGI now manages the largest volume of young patients with this eye condition, marking a significant milestone in pediatric ophthalmology.

PGI's Impressive Patient Numbers

According to recent medical documentation, PGI treated 7,269 children, including 602 new referrals, during the 2025-26 period. In comparison, the Miami center, previously recognized as the sole standalone pediatric glaucoma facility, treated 4,133 children, with 339 being new patients. Dr. Sushmita Kaushik, professor and head of glaucoma services at PGI, highlighted these figures as evidence of PGI's growing influence in the field.

This achievement was underscored by a comprehensive national study led by Dr. Kaushik, who also serves as the founder secretary of the Indian Pediatric Glaucoma Society. The study, which tracked childhood glaucoma cases across 13 leading medical centers in India, found that PGI handled the highest number of newly diagnosed cases nationwide. Together with the LV Prasad Eye Institute, PGI accounted for over half of all newly diagnosed pediatric glaucoma cases in India.

Since its inception as a once-a-week clinic in 2012, PGI's eye center has evolved into a critical resource for families dealing with the rare and complex disease. Under the leadership of Dr. Kaushik, the center has pioneered several advancements in the field. PGI performed India's first goniotomy, a delicate surgery for infants, and developed an affordable glaucoma drainage device for severe cases.
