Molbio Diagnostics Seeks Growth with ₹940 Crore IPO

Molbio Diagnostics plans a ₹940 crore IPO, aiming to enhance capital and reduce promoter stake. The firm's growth hinges on its TB test kits.
Molbio Diagnostics, a prominent player in the molecular diagnostics field, is set to raise ₹940 crore through its upcoming initial public offering (IPO). The company aims to bolster its capital expenditures with a fresh issue of ₹200 crore and reduce promoter stake by generating ₹740 crore via an offer for sale. This strategic move will see the promoter group's stake fall from 46.6% to 43% post-IPO.
Expansion and Market Reach
Founded in 2000, Molbio Diagnostics has established a global footprint, operating six manufacturing sites and serving over 90 countries. The company has carved a niche in the diagnostics industry with its innovative 'Truenat' platform, a portable system delivering rapid and accurate test results, particularly in resource-limited settings. Molbio offers solutions for over 30 diseases through 43 diagnostic assays, with a significant focus on tuberculosis (TB) test kits, which account for 70% of its diagnostic kit sales.
The firm's clientele includes government health programs, diagnostic labs, hospitals, and international health organizations. Notably, over four-fifths of its revenue is derived from government and international aid agencies, highlighting the company's reliance on these sectors.
Financial Performance
Molbio has demonstrated impressive financial growth, with revenue from operations increasing by 31.5% annually to ₹1,445.7 crore from FY24 to FY26. During the same period, net profit surged by 40.2% to ₹164.1 crore. The company's EBITDA rose by 33.2% to ₹328.2 crore, with the EBITDA margin improving to 22.6% in FY26 from 22% in FY24.
For FY26, the company reported a year-on-year revenue increase of 41.7%, while EBITDA and net profit grew by 27.9% and 18.4%, respectively. This robust financial performance underscores Molbio's potential to attract high-risk investors seeking long-term growth.
Valuation and Market Position
Post-IPO, Molbio Diagnostics is targeting a price-earnings (P/E) multiple of up to 57. While it lacks a directly comparable listed peer in India, other healthcare diagnostics and medical device firms like Poly Medicure, Dr. Lal PathLabs, Metropolis Healthcare, and Vijaya Diagnostic Centre trade at P/E multiples ranging from 54 to 81. This positioning could make Molbio an attractive option for investors willing to navigate the inherent risks of the diagnostics sector.
As Molbio Diagnostics embarks on this significant financial endeavor, the company's future growth will likely hinge on its ability to maintain and expand its market presence, particularly in the tuberculosis diagnostics segment, and to diversify its revenue streams beyond its current heavy reliance on government and aid agency contracts.
