Molbio Diagnostics IPO: A High-Risk Opportunity for Investors

Molbio Diagnostics plans to raise ₹940 crore via IPO, targeting capital expansion and stake reduction.
Molbio Diagnostics is set to make a significant move in the financial markets with its upcoming initial public offering (IPO), aiming to raise ₹940 crore. The molecular diagnostics company, known for its tuberculosis test kits, plans to utilize ₹200 crore of the funds for capital expenditures, while the remaining ₹740 crore will facilitate a reduction in promoter stake through an offer for sale.
Strategic Financial Maneuvers
Post-IPO, the promoter group's stake will drop from 46.6% to 43%. This strategic financial maneuver aims to broaden the company's investor base while ensuring funds are available for future growth initiatives. Molbio operates six manufacturing facilities across India and serves a global market, reaching over 90 countries.
The company's revenue model is heavily reliant on government and international aid agencies, which account for over 80% of its income. Its flagship product, the Truenat platform, offers a portable diagnostic solution that delivers accurate results within an hour, making it ideal for resource-limited settings.
Financial Performance and Market Position
From FY24 to FY26, Molbio Diagnostics saw a 31.5% annual increase in revenue, reaching ₹1,445.7 crore. Net profit also rose by 40.2% to ₹164.1 crore, with EBITDA climbing 33.2% to ₹328.2 crore. The EBITDA margin improved from 22% in FY24 to 22.6% in FY26, reflecting the company's robust financial health.
Despite its strong financials, Molbio faces challenges such as customer concentration, with its top clients contributing more than half of its revenue. This might pose risks if there are shifts in client purchasing patterns. However, the company's diverse product offering, including over 30 disease tests and partnerships in radiology and digital pathology, provides a buffer against market volatility.
Valuation and Investor Considerations
Molbio's IPO pricing demands a price-earnings (P/E) multiple of up to 57 based on its FY26 net profit. This valuation aligns with other healthcare diagnostics and medical device companies in India, such as Poly Medicure and Dr. Lal PathLabs, which trade at P/E multiples between 54 and 81.
While Molbio does not have a directly comparable listed peer in India, its market position and innovative product line make it an attractive option for investors with a high-risk appetite. The company's focus on expanding its footprint in the diagnostics sector, particularly in emerging markets, could offer substantial long-term growth potential.
