Molbio Diagnostics IPO: A High-Risk, High-Reward Opportunity?

Molbio Diagnostics is set to raise ₹940 crore through its IPO, aiming to expand operations and reduce promoter stakes.
Molbio Diagnostics, a prominent player in the molecular diagnostics sector, is poised to make a significant market move with its upcoming initial public offering (IPO). The company plans to raise ₹200 crore via a fresh issue of shares to bolster its capital expenditures. Additionally, it aims to generate ₹740 crore through an offer for sale, which will decrease the promoter group's stake from 46.6% to 43%.
Expanding Global Reach and Revenue Streams
Established in 2000, Molbio Diagnostics has made substantial strides in the diagnostics industry, particularly with its Truenat platform. This portable diagnostics system is designed for resource-limited environments and provides accurate test results within an hour. The company operates six manufacturing facilities in India and serves customers in over 90 countries, including government health programs and international healthcare organizations. A significant portion of its revenue—over 74%—comes from the sale of test kits, with tuberculosis diagnostic kits contributing 70% of this figure.
Financial Performance and Growth Prospects
Molbio has experienced robust financial growth, with revenue from operations increasing by 31.5% annually to ₹1,445.7 crore between FY24 and FY26. The net profit also saw a 40.2% annual increase, reaching ₹164.1 crore. The company's operating profit before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) rose by 33.2% to ₹328.2 crore during the same period, with the EBITDA margin improving from 22% in FY24 to 22.6% in FY26. On a year-on-year basis, FY26 saw a 41.7% jump in revenue, a 27.9% rise in EBITDA, and an 18.4% increase in net profit.
Market Valuation and Investor Considerations
Molbio Diagnostics is seeking a price-earnings (P/E) multiple of up to 57 based on its post-IPO equity and FY26 net profit. While the company lacks a directly comparable listed peer in India, it competes with other healthcare diagnostics and medical device firms such as Poly Medicure, Dr. Lal PathLabs, Metropolis Healthcare, and Vijaya Diagnostic Centre, which trade at P/E multiples ranging from 54 to 81.
The concentration of revenue from a few key clients and the reliance on government and international aid agencies, which account for over four-fifths of its revenue, are factors potential investors must consider. The IPO presents a high-risk, high-reward opportunity, particularly appealing to investors with a strong risk appetite seeking long-term growth potential.
