Molbio Diagnostics IPO: A High-Risk Bet with Potential Gains?

Molbio Diagnostics seeks ₹940 crore in IPO funds to expand and reduce promoter stake. High-risk investors eye potential long-term growth.
Molbio Diagnostics, a leading player in the molecular diagnostics field, is set to launch an initial public offering (IPO) aimed at raising ₹940 crore. The company plans to utilize ₹200 crore from this for capital expenditures, while the remaining ₹740 crore will be generated through an offer for sale, reducing the promoter stake from 46.6% to 43%.
Expansion and Revenue Growth
Founded in 2000, Molbio Diagnostics has established itself in the research, development, and manufacturing of diagnostic solutions targeting both infectious and non-communicable diseases. The company operates six manufacturing facilities across India, serving a global market spanning over 90 countries. Its products are widely used in government health programs, diagnostic laboratories, hospitals, and international healthcare organizations.
A significant portion of Molbio's revenue, over 74%, comes from the sale of diagnostic test kits, with tuberculosis kits alone accounting for 70% of this figure. The company has seen robust financial growth, with revenue from operations increasing by 31.5% annually to ₹1,445.7 crore, and net profit rising by 40.2% to ₹164.1 crore between FY24 and FY26.
Financial Performance and Market Position
In the fiscal year 2026, Molbio's revenue surged by 41.7%, while its EBITDA rose by 27.9% and net profit grew by 18.4% year-on-year. The EBITDA margin slightly increased to 22.6% in FY26 from 22% in FY24, indicating improved operational efficiency.
Molbio's valuation reflects a price-earnings (P/E) multiple of up to 57, which, while high, is comparable to other companies in the healthcare diagnostics sector such as Poly Medicure, Dr. Lal PathLabs, Metropolis Healthcare, and Vijaya Diagnostic Centre, whose P/E ratios range from 54 to 81.
Innovative Diagnostic Solutions
The company's flagship product, the 'Truenat' platform, is a portable diagnostic system designed for use in resource-limited settings, providing accurate test results within an hour. This innovation underscores Molbio's commitment to addressing global healthcare challenges.
Molbio also offers molecular testing solutions for over 30 diseases through 43 diagnostic assays, alongside radiology, digital pathology, and breast health screening solutions provided through its subsidiaries and strategic collaborations.
While Molbio Diagnostics presents a promising opportunity for investors, the high-risk nature of such an investment stems from its concentrated customer base and dependency on government and international aid agencies, which contribute over four-fifths of its revenue. Investors with a high-risk appetite may find this IPO attractive for potential long-term gains.
