Molbio Diagnostics IPO: A High-Risk Bet for Long-Term Growth?

Molbio Diagnostics plans an IPO to raise ₹200 crore for expansion, reducing promoter stake to 43%. Can it sustain its growth trajectory?
Molbio Diagnostics, a key player in the molecular diagnostics field, is seeking to raise ₹200 crore through an initial public offering (IPO) aimed at enhancing its capital expenditures. Additionally, the company plans to reduce its promoter group's stake from 46.6% to 43% by generating ₹740 crore through an offer for sale. The IPO comes as the company looks to expand its global footprint, currently serving over 90 countries with its diagnostic solutions.
Financial Performance and Market Reach
Founded in 2000, Molbio has made significant strides in the diagnostics sector, particularly with its 'Truenat' platform. This portable diagnostics system is designed for resource-limited settings, providing accurate test results in under an hour. The company offers molecular testing solutions for more than 30 diseases via 43 diagnostic assays, supplemented by radiology and digital pathology services through its subsidiaries.
Molbio's financial health appears robust, with revenue from operations climbing 31.5% annually to ₹1,445.7 crore between FY24 and FY26. During the same period, net profit increased by 40.2% to ₹164.1 crore, while EBITDA rose 33.2% to ₹328.2 crore. The EBITDA margin saw a slight improvement, reaching 22.6% in FY26 from 22% in FY24. In FY26 alone, the company's revenue surged 41.7%, with EBITDA and net profit growing by 27.9% and 18.4%, respectively.
Dependency on Key Clients and Revenue Sources
While Molbio has expanded its customer base, it remains heavily reliant on a few key clients, which contribute over half of its revenue. Government and international aid agencies account for more than 80% of its income, with 74% of revenue derived from the sale of test kits. Notably, 70% of these kits are for tuberculosis diagnostics, underscoring the company's dependence on this segment.
Despite the revenue concentration, Molbio's innovative offerings, particularly the Truenat platform, have solidified its position in the market. The platform's ability to deliver rapid and reliable diagnostics has made it a valuable tool in global health initiatives.
Valuation and Investor Considerations
The IPO values Molbio at a price-earnings (P/E) multiple of up to 57, a figure that aligns with other healthcare diagnostics and medical device companies in India, such as Poly Medicure, Dr. Lal PathLabs, and Vijaya Diagnostic Centre, whose P/E ratios range from 54 to 81. While Molbio lacks a directly comparable listed peer in India, the valuation reflects its growth potential and market position.
Investors with a high-risk appetite may find Molbio's IPO appealing, given the company's strong financial performance and innovative product line. However, the reliance on a limited number of clients and specific diagnostic segments poses a risk that should be carefully considered.
