Molbio Diagnostics IPO: A High-Risk Bet for Long-Term Growth?

Molbio Diagnostics plans to raise ₹940 crore through its IPO to fund growth and reduce promoter stake.
Molbio Diagnostics, a prominent player in the molecular diagnostics sector, is gearing up for an initial public offering (IPO) aimed at raising ₹940 crore. The company intends to utilize ₹200 crore from the fresh issue for capital expenditures, while the remaining ₹740 crore will come from an offer for sale, reducing the promoter group's stake from 46.6% to 43%.
Strategic Expansion and Product Portfolio
Founded in 2000, Molbio Diagnostics has established itself in the research, development, and manufacturing of diagnostic solutions targeting both infectious and non-communicable diseases. The company operates six manufacturing facilities across India and exports to over 90 countries. Its clientele includes government health programs, diagnostic labs, hospitals, and international healthcare organizations.
The company's flagship product, the 'Truenat' platform, offers portable diagnostic solutions capable of delivering accurate test results within an hour, particularly beneficial for resource-limited settings. Molbio provides molecular testing for over 30 diseases through 43 diagnostic assays. A significant portion of its revenue, approximately 74%, is derived from sales of test kits, with 70% of that from tuberculosis diagnostics.
Financial Performance and Market Position
Molbio has reported robust financial growth, with revenue from operations increasing by 31.5% annually to ₹1,445.7 crore between FY24 and FY26. During the same period, net profit surged 40.2% to ₹164.1 crore, while the EBITDA rose 33.2% to ₹328.2 crore. The EBITDA margin improved from 22% in FY24 to 22.6% in FY26.
In FY26, the company saw a year-on-year revenue jump of 41.7%, alongside a 27.9% rise in EBITDA and an 18.4% increase in net profit. The company demands a price-earnings (P/E) multiple of up to 57 post-IPO. Although it lacks directly comparable listed peers in India, companies like Poly Medicure and Dr. Lal PathLabs trade at P/E multiples ranging from 54 to 81.
Risks and Considerations for Investors
While Molbio Diagnostics has demonstrated substantial revenue growth, potential investors should consider the risks associated with customer concentration, as over half of its revenue comes from top clients. Additionally, government and international aid agencies account for more than 80% of its revenue, indicating a reliance on institutional clients.
For investors with a high-risk appetite, Molbio's IPO presents an opportunity to invest in a company with a growing presence in the diagnostics market. However, the dependency on a narrow client base and the competitive landscape of the healthcare diagnostics sector could pose challenges to sustained growth.
