Molbio Diagnostics IPO: A High-Risk Bet for Long-Term Gains?

Molbio Diagnostics seeks ₹940 crore through IPO, aiming to fund expansion and reduce promoter stake.
Molbio Diagnostics, a prominent player in the molecular diagnostics field, is gearing up for its initial public offering (IPO) with plans to raise a total of ₹940 crore. The company intends to secure ₹200 crore through a fresh issue, earmarked for capital expenditures, while an additional ₹740 crore will be raised through an offer for sale, which will reduce the promoter group's stake from 46.6% to 43%.
Expanding Global Reach and Product Portfolio
Founded in 2000, Molbio Diagnostics has established a robust presence in the global healthcare market, operating six manufacturing sites across India and serving clients in over 90 countries. The company's innovative 'Truenat' platform, a portable diagnostic system, is designed to deliver accurate test results in resource-limited settings within an hour. This technology, along with its comprehensive range of over 43 diagnostic assays covering 30 diseases, positions Molbio as a crucial player in both infectious and non-communicable disease diagnostics.
Government health programs and international aid agencies account for more than 80% of Molbio's revenue, highlighting its reliance on large-scale contracts. Notably, the company's tuberculosis diagnostic test kits contribute significantly, making up 70% of its test kit sales.
Financial Performance and Market Valuation
Molbio's financial performance has shown impressive growth, with revenue from operations increasing by 31.5% annually to ₹1,445.7 crore between FY24 and FY26. During the same period, net profit rose by 40.2% to ₹164.1 crore, and EBITDA climbed 33.2% to ₹328.2 crore. The EBITDA margin improved slightly to 22.6% in FY26 from 22% two years earlier. On a year-on-year basis in FY26, revenue surged 41.7%, EBITDA increased 27.9%, and net profit grew by 18.4%.
The company's post-IPO valuation demands a price-earnings (P/E) multiple of up to 57, which, while high, is in line with other healthcare diagnostics and medical device companies in India. Competitors such as Poly Medicure, Dr. Lal PathLabs, Metropolis Healthcare, and Vijaya Diagnostic Centre have P/E multiples ranging from 54 to 81.
Investment Considerations for High-Risk Investors
For investors with a high-risk appetite, Molbio's IPO presents an opportunity to tap into the growing diagnostics market. The company's strong revenue growth, innovative product offerings, and extensive client base position it well for future expansion. However, potential investors should consider the risks associated with its dependency on a few major clients and the competitive landscape of the diagnostics industry.
As Molbio Diagnostics continues to expand its global footprint and enhance its product offerings, the IPO represents a strategic move to fuel its growth ambitions. High-risk investors seeking long-term growth may find this IPO an attractive proposition, albeit with the inherent risks typical of the healthcare diagnostics sector.
