Molbio Diagnostics IPO: A High-Risk Bet for Future Growth?

Molbio Diagnostics seeks ₹940 crore through IPO to fund expansion and cut promoter stake.
Molbio Diagnostics has announced its plans to raise ₹940 crore through an initial public offering (IPO) aimed at bolstering its capital expenditure and reducing promoter stakes. The company, recognized for its molecular diagnostic solutions, intends to secure ₹200 crore from a fresh issuance of shares, while generating ₹740 crore through an offer for sale. This move will reduce the promoter group's stake from 46.6% to 43%.
Global Reach and Product Focus
Established in 2000, Molbio Diagnostics has carved a niche in the diagnostics industry with its innovative Truenat platform, a portable diagnostic system designed for resource-limited settings. The company operates six manufacturing facilities across India and serves clients in over 90 countries, including government health programs, diagnostic laboratories, hospitals, and international healthcare organizations. The platform offers molecular testing for over 30 diseases through 43 diagnostic assays.
Molbio's financial performance is largely driven by its diagnostic test kits, with 74% of its revenue stemming from test kit sales, and a significant 70% of that from tuberculosis diagnostic tests alone. The company's revenue and net profit have shown robust growth, with a 31.5% increase in revenue to ₹1,445.7 crore and a 40.2% rise in net profit to ₹164.1 crore between FY24 and FY26.
Financial Growth and Market Position
Molbio's growth trajectory is further evidenced by its operating profit before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), which increased by 33.2% to ₹328.2 crore over the same period. The EBITDA margin also improved slightly from 22% in FY24 to 22.6% in FY26. In the most recent fiscal year, the company saw a 41.7% surge in revenue, a 27.9% increase in EBITDA, and an 18.4% growth in net profit.
The company is seeking a price-earnings (P/E) multiple of up to 57 post-IPO. While Molbio lacks directly comparable listed peers in India, similar companies in the healthcare diagnostics and medical devices sector, such as Poly Medicure, Dr. Lal PathLabs, Metropolis Healthcare, and Vijaya Diagnostic Centre, trade at P/E multiples ranging from 54 to 81.
Investment Considerations
Molbio's IPO presents an opportunity for high-risk investors to gain exposure to a company with a strong market presence and a growing international footprint. However, potential investors should consider the company's customer concentration, as its top clients contribute over half of its revenue. Additionally, with government and international aid agencies accounting for more than 80% of its revenue, Molbio's financial health is closely tied to public health funding and international aid budgets.
As Molbio Diagnostics prepares for its IPO, the company's focus on innovation, coupled with its expanding global reach and robust financial growth, positions it as a potential high-risk, high-reward investment in the diagnostics sector.
