Molbio Diagnostics Eyes ₹940 Crore Through IPO for Expansion

Molbio Diagnostics plans an IPO to raise ₹940 crore, aiming at global expansion and reducing promoter stake.
Molbio Diagnostics, a prominent player in the molecular diagnostics sector, is set to launch an initial public offering (IPO) to raise a total of ₹940 crore. The funds are earmarked for capital expenditures and to facilitate the reduction of promoter holdings. This strategic move includes a fresh issue of shares to secure ₹200 crore, while an offer for sale is expected to generate ₹740 crore.
Strategic Financial Maneuver
The IPO will reduce the promoter group's stake from 46.6% to 43%. Molbio Diagnostics, established in 2000, has garnered significant attention for its innovative diagnostic solutions, particularly the 'Truenat' platform. This portable diagnostic system is designed for quick and accurate testing in resource-constrained settings, delivering results within an hour.
The company is not only focused on infectious diseases but also offers a range of diagnostic solutions for non-communicable diseases. Its extensive product line includes molecular testing for over 30 diseases across 43 different assays. Subsidiaries and strategic collaborations further bolster its offerings in radiology, digital pathology, and breast health screening.
Financial Performance and Market Reach
Molbio Diagnostics operates six manufacturing sites and serves more than 90 countries. The company’s revenue has experienced impressive growth, with a 31.5% annual increase in revenue from operations, reaching ₹1,445.7 crore between FY24 and FY26. During the same period, net profit increased by 40.2% to ₹164.1 crore, while EBITDA rose by 33.2% to ₹328.2 crore, reflecting an improved EBITDA margin of 22.6% in FY26.
Revenue from test kits, particularly those for tuberculosis, accounts for 74% of total sales, with a significant portion stemming from government and international aid agencies. This reliance underscores the company's focus on large-scale health initiatives.
Valuation and Investor Considerations
The IPO values Molbio Diagnostics at a price-earnings (P/E) multiple of up to 57, a figure that aligns with other prominent healthcare diagnostic and medical device companies in India. Despite the lack of directly comparable listed peers in the country, firms like Poly Medicure and Dr. Lal PathLabs exhibit P/E ratios ranging from 54 to 81.
While Molbio's growth trajectory and innovative product line present a compelling case for investors, the IPO is particularly appealing to those with a higher risk appetite. The company's strategic focus on expanding its global footprint and reducing promoter stakes could offer substantial long-term growth potential.
