Molbio Diagnostics Eyes ₹940 Crore in IPO to Fund Expansion and Reduce Promoter Stake

Molbio Diagnostics plans a ₹940 crore IPO to fund expansion and reduce promoter stake, leveraging strong revenue growth from its TB test kits.
Molbio Diagnostics is preparing to launch an initial public offering (IPO) aimed at raising ₹940 crore, with the dual purpose of funding capital expenditures and reducing promoter stakes. The company, a key player in the molecular diagnostics sector, intends to raise ₹200 crore through the issuance of new shares, while the remaining ₹740 crore will be generated through an offer for sale, decreasing the promoter group's stake from 46.6% to 43% post-IPO.
Expanding Operations and Reducing Promoter Stake
Founded in 2000, Molbio Diagnostics has established itself as a prominent manufacturer of diagnostic solutions, with a focus on both infectious and non-communicable diseases. The company operates six manufacturing facilities across India and serves over 90 countries, including government health programs, diagnostic laboratories, and international healthcare organizations.
The IPO represents a strategic move to bolster its operational capabilities and expand its market presence. The firm’s products, particularly its tuberculosis diagnostic test kits, have been instrumental in driving substantial revenue growth. The company's flagship product, the 'Truenat' platform, facilitates portable molecular testing with results in under an hour, catering to resource-limited settings.
Financial Performance and Market Position
Molbio Diagnostics has reported impressive financial growth over recent years. Between FY24 and FY26, the company’s revenue from operations increased by 31.5% annually, reaching ₹1,445.7 crore. Net profit also saw a significant rise, with a 40.2% annual growth, totaling ₹164.1 crore. The company’s EBITDA grew by 33.2% to ₹328.2 crore, with EBITDA margins increasing from 22% in FY24 to 22.6% in FY26.
Molbio's reliance on a concentrated customer base is notable, with its top clients generating over half of its revenue. The company derives approximately 74% of its revenue from the sale of test kits, with tuberculosis diagnostics accounting for a significant portion. Government and international aid agencies contribute over 80% of the company’s revenue, underscoring its strong ties with public health sectors globally.
Valuation and Investor Considerations
Post-IPO, Molbio Diagnostics is expected to command a price-earnings (P/E) multiple of up to 57, in line with other healthcare diagnostics and medical device companies in India, such as Poly Medicure, Dr. Lal PathLabs, Metropolis Healthcare, and Vijaya Diagnostic Centre, which trade at P/E multiples between 54 and 81.
For investors with a high-risk appetite, Molbio Diagnostics offers a promising opportunity for long-term growth, backed by its robust financial performance and strategic expansion plans. However, the reliance on a limited number of clients and high dependency on tuberculosis diagnostic sales present potential risks that investors should consider.
