Molbio Diagnostics Eyes ₹940 Crore from IPO, Targets High-Risk Investors

Molbio Diagnostics plans to raise ₹940 crore through an IPO to fund expansion and reduce promoter stake.
Molbio Diagnostics, a key player in molecular diagnostics, is gearing up for a significant initial public offering (IPO) aimed at raising ₹940 crore. The company plans to use ₹200 crore from this IPO to bolster its capital expenditures, while the remaining ₹740 crore will come from an offer for sale, reducing the promoter group's stake from 46.6% to 43%.
Strategic Expansion and Revenue Growth
Founded in 2000, Molbio has established itself as a leader in the diagnostics industry, operating six manufacturing facilities across India and serving clients in over 90 countries. The company provides diagnostic solutions for both infectious and non-communicable diseases. Its flagship product, the 'Truenat' platform, is designed for resource-constrained settings and delivers accurate results in under an hour. This technology is a cornerstone of Molbio's offerings, with tuberculosis test kits forming a substantial part of its portfolio.
Financially, Molbio has demonstrated robust growth. Between FY24 and FY26, its revenue from operations surged by 31.5% to ₹1,445.7 crore, while net profits increased by 40.2% to ₹164.1 crore. The company also reported a rise in operating profit before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) by 33.2% to ₹328.2 crore, with EBITDA margins improving to 22.6% in FY26 from 22% in FY24.
Investment Considerations and Market Position
Molbio's IPO presents a potential opportunity for investors with a high-risk appetite. The company's reliance on a few major clients, which contribute over half of its revenue, highlights a customer concentration risk. However, its broad reach in international markets and partnerships with government and international aid agencies, which account for more than 80% of its revenue, provide a buffer against market volatility.
The valuation of Molbio post-IPO demands a price-earnings (P/E) multiple of up to 57. While it lacks direct peers in the Indian market, similar companies like Poly Medicure and Dr. Lal PathLabs trade at P/E multiples between 54 and 81, suggesting competitive positioning within the sector.
Future Prospects and Industry Impact
Molbio's strategic focus on expanding its diagnostic capabilities and enhancing its manufacturing infrastructure positions it well for future growth. The IPO proceeds are expected to facilitate these expansions, potentially increasing market share and revenue streams.
For investors, Molbio's IPO offers a chance to capitalize on the growing demand for diagnostic solutions worldwide, especially in emerging markets. However, the inherent risks associated with high customer concentration and market competition must be carefully weighed.
