Molbio Diagnostics Eyes ₹200 Crore IPO for Expansion Amidst Investor Scrutiny

Molbio Diagnostics plans a ₹200 crore IPO to fund expansion and reduce promoter stake, targeting high-risk investors.
Molbio Diagnostics, a key player in molecular diagnostics, is setting its sights on raising ₹200 crore through an initial public offering (IPO) to bolster its capital expenditures. The company also plans to reduce its promoter stake by generating an additional ₹740 crore via an offer for sale. This strategic move is expected to lower the promoter group's stake from 46.6% to 43% post-IPO.
Financial Growth Driven by Tuberculosis Kits
Molbio's growth trajectory has been largely driven by its innovative tuberculosis diagnostic test kits. The company operates six manufacturing sites across India and serves over 90 countries, including significant partnerships with government health programs and international healthcare organizations. The revenue from operations surged 31.5% annually to ₹1,445.7 crore between FY24 and FY26, while net profit rose 40.2% to ₹164.1 crore in the same period.
The company’s flagship product, the 'Truenat' platform, offers portable diagnostics suited for resource-constrained environments, delivering accurate results within an hour. This platform supports molecular testing for over 30 diseases through its 43 diagnostic assays. Notably, 74% of Molbio's revenue stems from the sale of test kits, with tuberculosis kits accounting for a significant 70% of this figure.
Market Position and Investor Considerations
Despite its robust growth, Molbio Diagnostics faces challenges such as customer concentration, with top clients contributing over half of its revenue. The firm’s valuation demands a price-earnings multiple of up to 57 based on its post-IPO equity and net profit for FY26. Although it lacks directly comparable peers in India, other companies in the healthcare diagnostics and medical device sector trade at P/E multiples ranging from 54 to 81, including Poly Medicure and Dr. Lal PathLabs.
In terms of profitability, Molbio's EBITDA rose 33.2% to ₹328.2 crore, with an EBITDA margin increase from 22% in FY24 to 22.6% in FY26. The substantial year-on-year revenue growth of 41.7% in FY26 underscores the company’s expanding footprint in the diagnostics market.
Strategic Expansion Plans
Founded in 2000, Molbio Diagnostics has focused on research, development, and manufacturing of diagnostic solutions for both infectious and non-communicable diseases. The company’s strategic collaborations and subsidiary offerings extend to radiology, digital pathology, and breast health screening solutions, further diversifying its portfolio.
With government and international aid agencies accounting for over 80% of its revenue, Molbio is well-positioned to leverage its existing relationships for continued growth. However, the IPO's success will largely depend on attracting high-risk investors willing to bet on the company's long-term potential amidst an evolving healthcare landscape.
