Medtronic Ups Fiscal 2027 Projections Amid Heart Device Surge

Medtronic raises fiscal 2027 forecasts driven by strong heart device demand and strategic investments.
Medtronic, a leading player in the medical technology sector, has revised its fiscal 2027 financial projections upward, fueled by robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from its previous forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Strategic Investments and Market Expansion
In a strategic move to bolster its portfolio and market reach, Medtronic announced a significant $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a company specializing in heart-valve repair devices. This investment includes an option for Medtronic to acquire Pi-Cardia for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has injected $700 million into Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets.
Medtronic's CEO, Geoff Martha, highlighted the importance of these investments, emphasizing that the adoption of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets remains under 1%. This positions Cornerstone's Sentire device as a complement to Medtronic's existing Hugo system, targeting growth in high-potential segments.
Financial Performance and Market Dynamics
Medtronic's financial performance for the quarter reflected these strategic initiatives, with sales in its cardiovascular segment soaring by 19.5% to $3.93 billion. A major contributor to this growth was the company's pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% increase in sales. Overall, the company reported an adjusted quarterly profit of $1.45 per share, exceeding analyst expectations of $1.39, on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing the forecasted $9.55 billion.
Thierry Pieton, Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer, noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset its duty expenses for the quarter. However, future refunds have not been factored into the company's outlook.
Outlook and Growth Strategy
Medtronic's revised guidance reflects its confidence not only in current performance but also in the expansion potential of newer growth platforms. The lower end of its fiscal 2027 adjusted profit forecast has been raised to $5.94 per share, up from $5.90, while the upper end remains at $6.
Geoff Martha underscored the company's commitment to prioritizing high-growth segments within medtech, particularly those with large patient pools and significant market size. This strategy is poised to drive Medtronic's sustained growth and market leadership in the coming years.
