Medtronic Ups Fiscal 2027 Outlook on Heart Device Demand

Medtronic raises its fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by high demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has raised its fiscal 2027 revenue and profit forecasts, citing increased demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from its previous projection of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, Medtronic has adjusted its lower-end profit forecast to $5.94 per share from $5.90, while maintaining the upper limit at $6.
Strong Performance Across Segments
CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the broad performance across Medtronic's business segments and contributions from new growth platforms as key factors in the company's confidence in its revised outlook. The cardiovascular segment alone saw a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion, largely due to the success of its pulsed field ablation products, which grew by 88%.
Medtronic reported an adjusted quarterly profit of $1.45 per share on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in revenue, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Strategic Investments and Partnerships
In addition to its revised forecasts, Medtronic announced strategic investments totaling $780 million. The company will invest $80 million in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the U.S.
These investments reflect Medtronic's focus on high-growth segments within the medical technology field. Martha emphasized the potential of robotic surgery markets, noting that soft tissue robotic surgery penetration remains under 1% in emerging markets. Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's existing Hugo system, enhancing the company's robotic surgery offerings.
Financial Adjustments and Future Outlook
Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer, Thierry Pieton, mentioned that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into the company's future financial outlook.
Looking ahead, Medtronic's strategic focus remains on expanding its presence in large patient segments while prioritizing high-growth areas within the medtech industry. The company's ongoing mergers and acquisitions strategy aims to bolster its position in the global healthcare market.
