Medtronic Ups 2027 Forecasts on Heart Device Surge

Medtronic raises 2027 revenue forecasts, driven by strong demand for heart devices and strategic investments in Pi-Cardia and Cornerstone Robotics.
Medtronic has increased its fiscal 2027 projections, anticipating robust demand for its cardiovascular devices. The company has adjusted its expected revenue growth to a range of 7.25% to 7.75%, up from its previous forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%. This optimistic outlook is supported by the company's strong quarterly performance and the growing adoption of advanced heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures.
Strategic Investments in Cardiovascular Technology
In a move to bolster its cardiovascular portfolio, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia. This deal includes an option for Medtronic to acquire Pi-Cardia for $210 million. Additionally, the company has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets.
Medtronic CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the importance of these investments, noting that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery remains low in emerging markets. The company's partnership with Cornerstone is expected to complement its existing Hugo device, enhancing Medtronic's capabilities in this growing segment.
Financial Performance and Market Dynamics
Medtronic reported a quarterly revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' expectations of $9.55 billion. The company's cardiovascular segment saw a significant 19.5% increase in sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by the success of its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% surge in demand, reflecting the increasing need for treatments addressing irregular heart rhythms.
Despite the strong performance, Medtronic's finance chief Thierry Pieton mentioned that while the company received tariff refunds that nearly covered the duties paid during the quarter, future refunds have not been factored into their financial outlook.
Outlook and Market Confidence
Medtronic has adjusted the lower end of its fiscal 2027 adjusted per-share profit forecast to $5.94 from $5.90, maintaining the upper limit at $6. CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the broad performance across Medtronic's various business units and the increasing contributions from new growth platforms as key factors in their positive outlook.
Martha stated, "We're prioritizing the higher growth segments of medtech that we believe will become significant segments, not just in terms of growth, but also in addressing large patient pools." This focus on strategic growth areas underscores Medtronic's commitment to maintaining its leadership in the medical technology industry.
