Medtronic Ups 2027 Forecasts Amid Rising Heart Device Demand

Medtronic projects higher fiscal 2027 revenue due to increased demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 forecasts upward, anticipating stronger revenue growth driven by heightened demand for cardiovascular devices. The company now expects annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, compared to its previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%. The lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast has also been raised to $5.94 from $5.90, while the upper end remains at $6.
Strategic Investments and Market Expansion
In addition to its optimistic forecast, Medtronic announced a significant $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device manufacturer, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Medtronic has also poured $700 million into Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in various international markets outside the United States.
CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the company's strategy to focus on high-growth segments within the medtech industry, highlighting the potential of large patient pools and substantial market segments. He noted that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets is currently less than 1%, indicating significant growth opportunities.
Robust Cardiovascular Segment Performance
Medtronic's cardiovascular division reported a substantial 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely fueled by an 88% surge in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which is utilized in treating irregular heart rhythms.
Overall, Medtronic achieved an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Financial Considerations and Outlook
Thierry Pieton, Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer, revealed that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties it paid during the quarter. However, future refunds have not been factored into the company's financial outlook.
The company's strategic investments and strong performance across its business units provide Medtronic with the confidence to enhance its fiscal 2027 projections. The emphasis on expanding its portfolio in high-growth areas aligns with its long-term vision to capitalize on emerging opportunities within the medical technology sector.
