Medtronic raises fiscal 2027 revenue projections, buoyed by heart device demand and strategic investments.

Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 revenue and profit forecasts upwards, citing robust demand for its heart devices utilized in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company announced the adjustments on Tuesday as it continues to benefit from increased adoption of advanced medical technologies.

Increased Demand for Heart Devices

CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the comprehensive performance across Medtronic's business sectors and the notable contributions from new growth platforms as key factors in the forecast adjustment. Medtronic has increased the lower end of its fiscal 2027 adjusted per share profit forecast to $5.94, up from $5.90, while maintaining the upper end at $6. The company now anticipates an annual organic revenue growth range of 7.25% to 7.75%, an increase from the previous projection of 6.75% to 7.25%.

The company's cardiovascular segment experienced a significant boost, with sales jumping 19.5% to $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an 88% increase. Medtronic reported an adjusted quarterly per share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Strategic Investments and Market Expansion

Further bolstering its growth trajectory, Medtronic announced a strategic investment of $80 million in heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.

CEO Martha emphasized the potential for growth in soft tissue robotic surgery, noting that penetration in emerging markets remains below 1%. He described Cornerstone's Sentire device as complementary to Medtronic's existing Hugo device, suggesting a synergy that could enhance Medtronic's offerings in the surgical robotics space.

Financial Strategies and Market Outlook

Medtronic's finance chief, Thierry Pieton, mentioned that the company received tariff refunds that nearly covered the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into the future outlook. Martha stated that Medtronic is prioritizing investments in high-growth segments of medical technology, focusing on areas with substantial patient pools and significant market potential.

The company's steady mergers and acquisitions strategy underscores its commitment to expanding its footprint in burgeoning medical technology sectors. As Medtronic continues to invest in innovative solutions and expand its product offerings, the company is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for advanced medical devices.
