AI Summary

Medtronic raises fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by robust demand for heart devices and strategic investments.

Medtronic has bolstered its fiscal 2027 revenue and profit forecasts, fueled by rising demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The global medtech company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from its previous forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, the company adjusted the lower end of its fiscal 2027 adjusted per share profit forecast to $5.94 from $5.90, maintaining the upper end at $6.

Strategic Investments in Heart and Robotics Devices

In a strategic move, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States. CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the potential for growth in robotic surgery, particularly in emerging markets where penetration is currently under 1%.

"We've had a steady cadence of mergers and acquisitions, focusing on high-growth segments with large patient pools," Martha noted during a call with Reuters. The company's commitment to expanding its portfolio in high-demand areas is evident in these investments.

Cardiovascular Segment Performance

Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by the success of its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an impressive 88% increase. The technology is utilized to treat irregular heart rhythms, a critical area in cardiovascular healthcare.

In its latest financial report, Medtronic posted an adjusted quarterly per share profit of $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing LSEG-compiled estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales. CFO Thierry Pieton mentioned that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, though future refunds have not been factored into the outlook.

Outlook and Market Trends

The company's revised forecasts reflect a broader trend in the medtech industry, where firms are seeing increased adoption of advanced technologies and a robust demand for surgeries. Medtronic's strategic positioning and investments in emerging technologies underscore its confidence in capturing significant market share in these expanding sectors.
