Medtronic Revises 2027 Forecasts Amid Heart Device Surge

Medtronic boosts fiscal 2027 outlook on strong heart device demand, investing in Pi-Cardia and Cornerstone Robotics.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 forecasts, citing robust demand for its cardiovascular devices. The medical technology giant increased its revenue growth outlook to between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from the previously projected 6.75% to 7.25%. The company also adjusted the lower end of its profit forecast, now predicting adjusted earnings per share to be at least $5.94, up from $5.90.
CEO Geoff Martha expressed confidence in the company's performance, highlighting not only the strength of a recent quarter but also the breadth of success across various business segments. Medtronic's cardiovascular segment notably reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion, driven by an 88% growth in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which addresses irregular heart rhythms.
Strategic Investments in Heart Technology
In a strategic move, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a maker of heart-valve repair devices, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.
Martha noted that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets is currently less than 1%, suggesting significant growth potential. He emphasized that Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's existing Hugo system, aligning with the company's strategy to focus on high-growth segments with large patient bases.
Financial Performance and Market Outlook
Medtronic reported a quarterly adjusted per share profit of $1.45, surpassing analyst predictions of $1.39, on revenue of $9.76 billion, also exceeding expectations of $9.55 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.
The company's Chief Financial Officer, Thierry Pieton, revealed that recent tariff refunds nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, future refunds have not been factored into the company's financial outlook. Medtronic's ongoing mergers and acquisitions strategy remains focused on segments with substantial growth opportunities and extensive patient populations.
By prioritizing investments in cutting-edge medical technology and expanding its portfolio, Medtronic aims to maintain its leadership in the medtech sector, capitalizing on the increasing adoption of advanced surgical and cardiovascular solutions.
