AI Summary

Medtronic boosts FY 2027 outlook, driven by strong heart device demand and strategic investments.

Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial forecasts upward, anticipating robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. This decision reflects the company's confidence in its expanding portfolio and strategic investments.

Strong Financial Projections

The medical technology giant increased the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast for fiscal 2027 to $5.94 from $5.90, while maintaining the upper limit at $6. Additionally, Medtronic now expects annual organic revenue growth to range between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from a previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%.

Geoff Martha, Medtronic's CEO, attributed the optimistic outlook to not only the strong quarterly performance but also the breadth of growth across various business segments. "What gives us confidence is the increasing contributions from newer growth platforms," Martha remarked during a post-earnings call.

Strategic Investments and Market Expansion

Alongside its revised forecasts, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. The firm also invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.

Martha highlighted the potential of Cornerstone's Sentire device, which complements Medtronic's Hugo system, particularly in emerging markets where robotic surgery penetration remains below 1%.

Cardiovascular Segment Drives Growth

Medtronic's cardiovascular segment has experienced significant growth, with quarterly sales rising by 19.5% to $3.93 billion. This surge was largely driven by the company's pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an 88% increase in sales. These devices are used to treat irregular heart rhythms, contributing to the segment's robust performance.

During the recent quarter, Medtronic reported an adjusted per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing LSEG-compiled estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales.

Financial Maneuvers and Market Positioning

Thierry Pieton, Medtronic's finance chief, noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into the company's future outlook.

Martha emphasized Medtronic's strategic focus on high-growth segments within the medtech industry, targeting large patient pools and significant market opportunities. "We've had a steady cadence of M&A, prioritizing the higher growth segments of medtech," he stated.
