AI Summary

Medtronic anticipates higher revenue growth, driven by robust demand for heart devices and strategic investments.

Medtronic has announced an optimistic adjustment to its fiscal 2027 forecasts, citing increased demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company has raised the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast to $5.94 from $5.90, maintaining the upper end at $6. Medtronic now expects annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from the previously projected range of 6.75% to 7.25%.

Strategic Investments and Market Expansion

Medtronic has made significant investments to bolster its position in the cardiovascular market. The company plans to invest $80 million in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the U.S.

CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the strategic importance of these investments, noting the low penetration rate of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets. He highlighted that Cornerstone's Sentire system complements Medtronic's existing Hugo device, reinforcing the company's commitment to expanding its footprint in high-growth segments of the medtech industry.

Strong Financial Performance

Medtronic's latest financial results reflect robust performance across its business segments. The company's cardiovascular division reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion, primarily driven by an 88% growth in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which is used to treat irregular heart rhythms. Overall, Medtronic reported an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer, Thierry Pieton, mentioned that the company received tariff refunds covering duties paid during the quarter, though future refunds have not been factored into the fiscal outlook.

Future Outlook

The company is confident in its growth trajectory, driven by the breadth of its business performance and contributions from newer growth platforms. Medtronic continues to prioritize high-growth segments with large patient pools, ensuring sustained expansion in the medtech sector.
