Medtronic Raises Fiscal 2027 Outlook Amid Rising Heart Device Demand

Medtronic boosts fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by high demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic, a leader in medical technology, has revised its financial projections for fiscal year 2027, citing increased demand for its heart devices, particularly those used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company announced an upward adjustment in its revenue growth outlook, now anticipating annual organic growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the previous forecast range of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Heart Devices Drive Revenue Growth
The surge in demand for heart devices has significantly bolstered Medtronic's financial outlook. The company's cardiovascular segment reported a notable 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. A key contributor to this growth is the pulsed field ablation portfolio, which treats irregular heart rhythms and experienced an impressive 88% growth.
CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the broad performance across Medtronic’s business units and the increasing impact of new growth platforms. "What gives us confidence is not simply the strength of the quarter, but importantly, the breadth of performance across our businesses," Martha stated during a post-earnings call.
Strategic Investments and Market Expansion
In addition to its revised forecasts, Medtronic is making strategic investments to strengthen its market position. The company announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to purchase the company for $210 million. Medtronic also committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets.
These investments align with Medtronic's strategy to focus on high-growth segments within the medical technology industry. Martha highlighted the potential of robotic surgery, stating that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets is currently less than 1%. Cornerstone's Sentire device is seen as complementary to Medtronic's existing Hugo device, enhancing their portfolio in this area.
Financial Performance and Future Outlook
Medtronic reported an adjusted quarterly earnings per share of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in revenue, according to data compiled by LSEG. The company has raised the lower end of its fiscal 2027 adjusted per share profit forecast to $5.94, while maintaining the upper end at $6.
Chief Financial Officer Thierry Pieton noted that the company received tariff refunds that almost offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into future financial outlooks.
As Medtronic continues to navigate the evolving landscape of medical technology, its strategic investments and strong demand for heart devices position it well for sustained growth in the coming years.
