AI Summary

Medtronic ups fiscal 2027 revenue forecast, driven by increased demand for heart devices and strategic investments.

In a strategic move reflecting robust demand for its cardiovascular products, Medtronic has raised its fiscal 2027 revenue growth projections. The medical technology giant now anticipates an annual organic revenue growth of 7.25% to 7.75%, up from an earlier forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%. This adjustment comes as the company experiences significant demand for its heart devices, which are integral to complex cardiovascular procedures.

Increased Demand for Cardiovascular Devices

CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the company's confidence not only in its recent quarterly performance but also in the broad-based success across its various business units. The increasing contributions from newer growth platforms have been particularly promising. Medtronic's cardiovascular segment, a key driver of this optimism, reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. A standout performer within this segment was the pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an impressive 88% growth, underscoring its role in treating irregular heart rhythms.

Strategic Investments in Medical Technology

Medtronic is not only banking on organic growth but is also making strategic investments to bolster its portfolio. The company announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets. Martha noted that Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's existing Hugo system, particularly in emerging markets where the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery remains below 1%.

Financial Performance and Future Outlook

Medtronic's adjusted quarterly earnings per share hit $1.45, surpassing analyst expectations of $1.39, with total revenue reaching $9.76 billion against the forecasted $9.55 billion, according to LSEG data. The company also adjusted the lower end of its fiscal 2027 adjusted per-share profit forecast, raising it from $5.90 to $5.94, while maintaining the upper limit at $6. CFO Thierry Pieton mentioned that recent tariff refunds nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, though future refunds are not factored into the current outlook.

Overall, Medtronic's strategic focus on high-growth segments within the medtech industry, supported by a steady cadence of mergers and acquisitions, positions it well to capitalize on large patient pools and drive substantial future growth.
