Medtronic Raises Fiscal 2027 Outlook Amid Heart Device Demand Surge

Medtronic elevates fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by a 19.5% sales boost in cardiovascular devices.
Medtronic has increased its fiscal 2027 revenue and profit forecasts, attributing the rise to robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The medical technology giant now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from its previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast has been raised to $5.94 from $5.90, while the upper limit remains at $6.
Investments Fuel Strategic Growth
The company announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device manufacturer, with an option for a $210 million acquisition. It also committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the U.S. Medtronic CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the potential of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets, noting that penetration is currently less than 1%.
"Our confidence stems not only from the quarter's strength but also from the broad performance across our businesses and increasing contributions from newer growth platforms," said Martha during a post-earnings call.
Cardiovascular Segment Drives Performance
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was significantly driven by an 88% increase in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, designed to address irregular heart rhythms.
The company's financial chief, Thierry Pieton, noted that tariff refunds nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, though future refunds are not factored into the current outlook.
Medtronic's quarterly performance exceeded expectations, with an adjusted per-share profit of $1.45 on $9.76 billion in revenue, surpassing analyst estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG-compiled data.
Strategic Focus on High-Growth Segments
Medtronic continues to focus on high-growth segments within the medtech industry. "We've maintained a steady cadence of mergers and acquisitions, prioritizing segments with large patient pools and substantial growth potential," Martha stated.
These strategic moves underscore Medtronic's commitment to expanding its market presence and leveraging its technological advancements to meet the rising demand for innovative cardiovascular solutions.
