Medtronic adjusts 2027 forecasts, citing high demand for heart devices and strategic investments.

Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 revenue forecasts upwards, driven by an increasing demand for heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company announced on Tuesday that it expects annual organic revenue growth to be between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the previous projection of 6.75% to 7.25%.

Strategic Investments and Acquisitions

In a bid to strengthen its portfolio, Medtronic is investing heavily in related sectors. The company revealed an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.

CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the significance of these moves, pointing to the vast potential for growth in soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets. "We're prioritizing the higher growth segments of medtech," Martha stated, emphasizing the focus on large patient pools and significant market segments.

Financial Performance and Market Response

Medtronic's financial performance has reflected its strategic initiatives. The company's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This surge was largely attributed to its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% growth.

For the quarter, Medtronic posted an adjusted profit of $1.45 per share on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG. Despite receiving tariff refunds that nearly offset duties paid during the quarter, Medtronic has not factored future refunds into its projections.

Outlook and Industry Trends

Medtech firms are experiencing a wave of adoption of newer technologies and a robust demand for surgeries. Medtronic's CFO, Thierry Pieton, noted that these factors, coupled with strategic investments, provide a solid foundation for the company’s optimistic outlook.

CEO Martha reiterated confidence in the company's performance, citing the broad contributions from various business segments and the growing impact of newer growth platforms. He emphasized that Medtronic's steady approach to mergers and acquisitions is aimed at capturing substantial growth opportunities within the medical technology landscape.
