Medtronic Raises Fiscal 2027 Forecasts Amid Surge in Heart Device Demand

Medtronic increases fiscal 2027 revenue projections, driven by strong demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has announced an upward revision of its fiscal 2027 revenue growth forecast, capitalizing on increasing demand for its cardiovascular devices. The company now expects annual organic revenue growth of 7.25% to 7.75%, up from the prior estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%. The lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast has also been raised to $5.94 from $5.90, while maintaining the upper limit at $6.
Strategic Investments Fuel Growth
In a bid to strengthen its market position, Medtronic has committed significant investments in emerging medical technologies. The company announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device manufacturer, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device outside the United States. This move is expected to enhance Medtronic's presence in the soft tissue robotic surgery market, particularly in emerging markets where adoption rates are currently below 1%.
Performance Driven by Cardiovascular Segment
The company's cardiovascular segment reported a notable 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by the pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% surge, addressing the needs of complex cardiovascular procedures. CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the broad performance across Medtronic's business units and the growing contribution from newer growth platforms as key factors bolstering the company's confidence in its revised forecasts.
Medtronic's financial performance exceeded expectations, with adjusted quarterly per-share profit reaching $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst predictions of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG-compiled data.
Future Outlook and Market Dynamics
Despite optimistic projections, Medtronic's financial outlook does not account for potential future tariff refunds, which the company received during the quarter, nearly offsetting the duties it paid. CFO Thierry Pieton indicated that these refunds have not been factored into the fiscal forecasts.
Medtronic's strategic focus on high-growth segments within the medtech industry, coupled with substantial patient pools, positions the company to leverage its investments effectively. CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the importance of targeting large, rapidly expanding market segments to drive future growth.
