Medtronic Raises Fiscal 2027 Forecasts Amid Surge in Heart Device Demand

Medtronic enhances fiscal 2027 outlook, driven by strong heart device demand and strategic investments in medical technology.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial projections upward, citing increased demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company announced this development on Tuesday, reflecting its confidence in the growing adoption of advanced medical technologies and robust surgical demand.
Strategic Investments and Financial Projections
In addition to adjusting its revenue outlook, Medtronic disclosed a series of strategic investments aimed at bolstering its market position. The company will invest $80 million in Pi-Cardia, a maker of heart-valve repair devices, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic has committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets.
Medtronic has raised the lower end of its fiscal 2027 adjusted per share profit forecast from $5.90 to $5.94, while maintaining the upper end at $6. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from the previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%.
CEO and Financial Insights
CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the broad-based performance across Medtronic's business segments and the increasing contributions from new growth platforms as key factors in the company's optimistic outlook. During a post-earnings call, Martha emphasized the importance of targeting high-growth areas within the medical technology sector.
Thierry Pieton, Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer, noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, future refunds have not been factored into the company's financial outlook.
Robust Cardiovascular Segment Performance
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by the company's pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an impressive 88% growth. The technology is used to treat irregular heart rhythms, underscoring the company's strength in cardiovascular innovations.
For the quarter, Medtronic posted an adjusted per share profit of $1.45 on $9.76 billion in revenue, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.39 per share profit on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Martha also discussed the potential of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets, where penetration is currently less than 1%. He highlighted that Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's existing Hugo device, positioning the company to capitalize on the growing demand for robotic surgical solutions.
