Medtronic boosts revenue forecasts, driven by strong demand for heart devices and strategic investments.

Medtronic, a leading medical technology company, has revised its fiscal 2027 revenue and profit forecasts upward, citing increased demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company announced on Tuesday that it expects annual organic revenue growth of 7.25% to 7.75%, up from the previous projection of 6.75% to 7.25%. This adjustment reflects the robust adoption of newer medical technologies and a surge in surgical procedures.

Strategic Investments to Drive Growth

In a strategic move to bolster its cardiac care portfolio, Medtronic revealed an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a company specializing in heart-valve repair devices. The agreement includes an option to acquire Pi-Cardia for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States. CEO Geoff Martha emphasized that these investments align with Medtronic's focus on high-growth segments in the medtech industry.

Strong Financial Performance

Medtronic's fiscal adjustments were announced following a strong quarterly performance. The company's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in sales, reaching $3.93 billion. A significant contributor to this growth was the pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% increase in demand. Overall, Medtronic reported an adjusted quarterly per share profit of $1.45 on a revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' estimates of $1.39 per share profit on $9.55 billion in revenue, according to LSEG-compiled data.

Outlook and Market Expansion

Medtronic's financial chief, Thierry Pieton, noted that the company benefited from tariff refunds nearly covering the duties paid during the quarter. However, future refunds have not been factored into the current financial outlook. Looking ahead, Medtronic aims to expand its market presence, particularly in the realm of soft tissue robotic surgery, where market penetration remains below 1% in emerging markets. The acquisition of Cornerstone's Sentire device is expected to complement Medtronic's existing Hugo robotic system, enhancing its competitive edge in the global market.

Geoff Martha highlighted the company's strategic focus on sectors with large patient pools and significant growth potential, reinforcing Medtronic's commitment to innovation and market leadership in the medtech industry.
