AI Summary

Medtronic boosts 2027 forecasts with increased heart device demand, investing heavily in future growth.

Medtronic has raised its fiscal 2027 revenue growth and profit forecasts, citing robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from its previous projection of 6.75% to 7.25%. The lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast has also been increased to $5.94, while the upper end remains at $6.

Strategic Investments in Cardiac Device Sector

In a strategic move to bolster its cardiac device offerings, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.

CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the company's confidence in its future growth, pointing to the increasing contributions from newer growth platforms and the breadth of performance across its various business segments. The company's cardiovascular segment has seen a significant boost, with quarterly sales jumping 19.5% to $3.93 billion. This growth is largely driven by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% increase in demand.

Market Expansion and Financial Performance

Medtronic's financial performance exceeded expectations, reporting an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst estimates of $1.39 on $9.55 billion sales, according to LSEG-compiled data. The company also benefited from tariff refunds, which nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, although these refunds are not factored into future outlooks.

Martha emphasized the company's focus on high-growth segments within the medical technology sector, targeting large patient pools and substantial market segments. He noted the low penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets, with Cornerstone's Sentire device complementing Medtronic's existing Hugo device.

Medtronic's strategic investments and strong market performance highlight its commitment to maintaining a leadership position in the medtech industry. As demand for advanced cardiovascular devices continues to grow, the company is poised to capitalize on these expanding opportunities.
