Medtronic Raises Fiscal 2027 Forecasts Amid Heart Device Surge

Medtronic ups fiscal 2027 projections on rising heart device demand, investing in Pi-Cardia and Cornerstone Robotics.
Medtronic has updated its fiscal 2027 financial outlook, reflecting growing confidence in the demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company has raised the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast to $5.94 from $5.90, maintaining the upper limit at $6. Annual organic revenue growth is now expected between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from previous projections of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Investments in Cardiovascular Innovations
In a strategic move to bolster its cardiovascular offerings, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device manufacturer. The agreement includes an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute its robotic surgical devices in select markets outside the United States.
Geoff Martha, Medtronic's CEO, emphasized the company's focus on high-growth segments within the medical technology sector. "We've had a steady cadence of M&A, prioritizing areas with large patient pools and significant growth potential," Martha stated during a post-earnings call.
Strong Performance in Cardiovascular Segment
The company's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by the pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an impressive 88% growth. These devices are used for treating irregular heart rhythms, a common condition affecting millions worldwide.
Medtronic's latest quarterly results exceeded expectations, posting an adjusted per-share profit of $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion. Analysts had estimated a profit of $1.39 per share on sales of $9.55 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Strategic Positioning for Future Growth
Medtronic's CFO, Thierry Pieton, highlighted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly covered the duties paid during the quarter. However, future refunds have not been included in the company's projections. Martha noted that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets remains under 1%, positioning Medtronic to capitalize on these untapped opportunities with products like Cornerstone's Sentire and Medtronic's Hugo device.
As Medtronic continues to navigate the dynamic landscape of medical technology, its strategic investments and strong quarterly performance underscore its commitment to driving innovation and growth in the cardiovascular domain.
