Medtronic Raises Fiscal 2027 Forecasts Amid Heart Device Surge

Medtronic boosts fiscal 2027 outlook, driven by robust demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial forecasts upward, buoyed by increasing demand for its cardiovascular devices. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an improvement from the previously projected 6.75% to 7.25% range.
Strong Performance and Strategic Investments
CEO Geoff Martha attributed the optimistic outlook not only to recent strong quarterly performance but also to the growing contributions from new business segments. The company reported a quarterly adjusted earnings per share of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion, according to LSEG data.
In addition to revising its fiscal outlook, Medtronic announced significant investments aimed at expanding its technological capabilities. The company will invest $80 million in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device manufacturer, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device outside the U.S.
Market Dynamics and Growth Segments
The surge in demand for Medtronic's heart devices, particularly its pulsed field ablation portfolio used in treating irregular heart rhythms, has been a major growth driver. This segment alone reported an impressive 88% growth, contributing to a 19.5% increase in cardiovascular sales, which reached $3.93 billion for the quarter.
Medtronic's CFO, Thierry Pieton, noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, although future refunds are not factored into the current outlook. The strategic acquisitions and investments align with Medtronic's focus on high-growth segments within the medtech industry, which are expected to serve large patient populations.
Future Prospects
Geoff Martha expressed confidence in the company's strategic direction, highlighting the potential for growth in soft tissue robotic surgery markets, especially in emerging economies where penetration remains below 1%. The integration of Cornerstone's Sentire device with Medtronic's existing Hugo platform is seen as a complementary move to strengthen its position in the surgical robotics market.
With these strategic initiatives, Medtronic aims to capitalize on the expanding demand for advanced medical technologies, positioning itself for continued growth and leadership in the global medtech landscape.
