Medtronic Raises Fiscal 2027 Forecasts Amid Heart Device Surge

Medtronic ups fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by strong demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has increased its fiscal 2027 forecasts, citing a robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company announced on Tuesday that it expects annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the previous projection of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Strategic Investments and Acquisitions
In a strategic move to bolster its portfolio, Medtronic disclosed an $80 million investment in Israeli heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, acquiring rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in markets outside the U.S.
Geoff Martha, Medtronic's CEO, emphasized the company's focus on high-growth segments within the medtech industry. Martha noted the potential in emerging markets for soft tissue robotic surgery, where penetration remains under 1%. The Sentire system from Cornerstone is seen as complementary to Medtronic's own Hugo robotic system, further enhancing their surgical solutions.
Financial Performance and Outlook
Medtronic's financial results for the quarter exceeded expectations, with adjusted earnings per share reaching $1.45 on a revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in revenue, according to data compiled by LSEG. The company's cardiovascular segment reported a significant 19.5% increase in sales, reaching $3.93 billion, largely driven by an 88% growth in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which is used to treat irregular heart rhythms.
The company also adjusted its fiscal 2027 profit forecast, raising the lower end to $5.94 per share from $5.90, while maintaining the upper limit at $6 per share. Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer Thierry Pieton mentioned that tariff refunds nearly compensated for the duties paid during the quarter, though future refunds have not been factored into their outlook.
Expanding Horizons
Medtronic's strategy includes a steady cadence of mergers and acquisitions, focusing on sectors with large patient pools and substantial growth potential. The company's recent investments align with its goal to expand its footprint in the medical technology field, particularly in areas showing strong demand and technological advancements.
