AI Summary

Medtronic boosts fiscal 2027 outlook due to strong heart device demand and strategic investments.

Medtronic has increased its fiscal 2027 revenue and profit forecasts, citing robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company now projects annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from its previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%. The lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast has also been raised to $5.94 from $5.90, while the upper end remains at $6.

Strategic Investments in Heart and Robotic Technologies

In a move to strengthen its position in the cardiovascular market, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device company, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. The company has also invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.

Medtronic CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the importance of these strategic investments during a post-earnings call, highlighting the potential for growth in medtech segments with large patient pools. "We've had a steady cadence of M&A, prioritizing high-growth segments of medtech that are going to be significant," he stated.

Strong Performance in Cardiovascular Segment

The company's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was driven by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an 88% surge in demand. This portfolio is essential for treating irregular heart rhythms, a key area of focus for the company.

Medtronic's financial performance for the quarter exceeded expectations, with an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Financial Adjustments and Market Outlook

Thierry Pieton, Medtronic's finance chief, noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties it paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into future financial projections. The company continues to focus on expanding its market presence and enhancing its product offerings to meet the growing demand for advanced medical technologies.
