Medtronic Raises Fiscal 2027 Forecasts Amid Heart Device Demand Surge

Medtronic boosts fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by strong demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial forecasts upward, citing a surge in demand for its heart devices, which are increasingly used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from an earlier estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%. This adjustment reflects Medtronic's confidence in the expanding adoption of advanced medical technologies and robust surgical demand.
Strategic Investments in Heart Technology
In a strategic move to bolster its cardiovascular portfolio, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, the company invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States. These investments align with Medtronic's focus on high-growth segments within the medtech industry.
CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the broad performance across Medtronic’s business segments and emphasized contributions from new growth platforms as key factors in the company's optimistic outlook. During a post-earnings call, Martha expressed confidence in the company's strategic direction and market positioning.
Financial Performance and Market Expansion
Medtronic reported a significant 19.5% increase in sales within its cardiovascular segment, totaling $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% surge in demand. The company also posted an adjusted quarterly per share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in revenue, according to LSEG data.
Medtronic’s Chief Financial Officer, Thierry Pieton, noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, these future refunds have not been factored into the company's revised outlook.
Focus on Emerging Markets
The company is also eyeing opportunities in emerging markets, where the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery remains below 1%. Martha indicated that Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's existing Hugo device, further expanding its presence in these regions.
Medtronic's strategic investments and revised forecasts underscore its commitment to capitalizing on the growing demand for innovative cardiovascular solutions and its ability to adapt to evolving market dynamics.
