AI Summary

Medtronic ups its fiscal 2027 revenue forecast, driven by high demand for heart devices and strategic investments.

Medtronic has increased its fiscal 2027 revenue and profit forecasts, citing robust demand for its heart device offerings used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth of 7.25% to 7.75%, up from its previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%. The lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast has been raised to $5.94, while the upper limit remains at $6.

Strategic Investments and Market Expansion

In a move to strengthen its position in the cardiovascular market, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets. This investment aligns with the company's strategy to expand its presence in the burgeoning field of robotic surgery.

CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the breadth of performance across Medtronic's divisions, noting significant contributions from emerging growth platforms. He highlighted the untapped potential in soft tissue robotic surgery, especially in emerging markets where penetration is less than 1%.

Financial Performance and Future Outlook

For the recent quarter, Medtronic reported a 19.5% increase in sales within its cardiovascular segment, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an 88% increase in demand. The company's overall quarterly revenue stood at $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' expectations of $9.55 billion. Adjusted quarterly per-share profit was reported at $1.45, slightly above the anticipated $1.39.

Finance Chief Thierry Pieton noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, although future refunds have not been factored into the current outlook.

Medtronic's strategic focus on high-growth segments with large patient pools is poised to sustain its momentum in the medtech industry. The company continues to prioritize mergers and acquisitions to bolster its growth trajectory, targeting areas with substantial market potential.
