Medtronic Raises 2027 Projections Amid Surge in Heart Device Demand

Medtronic has updated its fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by increased demand for heart devices and strategic investments in medtech.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial projections, anticipating stronger revenue growth driven by a surge in demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company now expects annual organic revenue growth to range between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the previous forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%.
CEO Geoff Martha expressed confidence in the company's diversified performance across various business segments and the growing contributions from new growth platforms. During a post-earnings call, Martha emphasized the strength of the current quarter as a basis for the optimistic outlook.
Medtronic has also adjusted the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast for fiscal 2027, raising it to $5.94 from $5.90, while maintaining the upper limit at $6. This adjustment reflects the company's robust performance in its cardiovascular segment, which saw a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, totaling $3.93 billion. This growth was largely fueled by an 88% increase in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, designed to treat irregular heart rhythms.
Strategic Investments in Medtech
In addition to its updated forecasts, Medtronic announced strategic investments aimed at expanding its presence in the medtech sector. The company will invest $80 million in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device manufacturer, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in selected markets outside the United States.
Martha highlighted the potential for growth in the soft tissue robotic surgery sector, particularly in emerging markets where penetration is currently less than 1%. He noted that Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's existing Hugo device, enhancing the company's offerings in this high-growth segment.
Financial Performance and Market Trends
Medtronic reported an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in revenues, according to data compiled by LSEG.
The company's Chief Financial Officer, Thierry Pieton, mentioned that Medtronic received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into the company's future outlook.
Medtronic's strategic focus on high-growth sectors within medtech, backed by substantial investments and strong quarterly performance, positions the company to capitalize on the increasing demand for advanced cardiovascular solutions.
