Medtronic Raises 2027 Projections Amid Heart Device Surge

Medtronic ups fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 outlook, buoyed by robust demand for its cardiovascular devices and strategic investments in innovative technologies. The medical device giant announced an increase in its revenue growth projections and adjusted profit forecasts, citing strong performance across its business segments.
Heart Device Demand Fuels Growth
Medtronic's CEO, Geoff Martha, highlighted the broad-based performance and contributions from new growth platforms as key factors behind the optimistic forecasts. The company now expects annual organic revenue growth to range between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from its previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, Medtronic adjusted the lower end of its fiscal 2027 per share profit forecast to $5.94, maintaining the upper end at $6.
The cardiovascular segment, a significant driver of this growth, reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This surge was largely attributed to the success of its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% growth. These devices are crucial for treating irregular heart rhythms, further underscoring the importance of Medtronic's cardiovascular offerings in the current market.
Strategic Investments and Market Expansion
In addition to organic growth, Medtronic is bolstering its market position through strategic investments. The company has committed $80 million to Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to purchase the company for $210 million. This move aligns with Medtronic's focus on expanding its capabilities in heart device technologies.
Further expanding its portfolio, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics. This investment grants the company rights to distribute Cornerstone's robotic surgical device, Sentire, in various international markets. Martha noted that the adoption of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets remains below 1%, presenting significant growth opportunities. Sentire is seen as complementary to Medtronic's existing Hugo device, enhancing its robotic surgery offerings.
Financial Performance and Future Outlook
Medtronic's financial results for the quarter exceeded expectations, reporting an adjusted quarterly per share profit of $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales. CFO Thierry Pieton mentioned that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, although future refunds have not been factored into the current outlook.
As Medtronic continues to prioritize high-growth segments within the medtech industry, its strategic acquisitions and investments are aimed at capturing larger patient pools and expanding its market reach. Martha emphasized the company's steady approach to mergers and acquisitions, targeting segments with substantial growth potential.
