Medtronic increases 2027 forecasts on strong heart device demand and strategic investments.

Medtronic has boosted its fiscal 2027 revenue growth projections, driven by heightened demand for its cardiovascular devices. The medical technology giant announced on Tuesday that it expects annual organic revenue growth to range between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from its previous forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, the company raised the lower end of its adjusted per share profit forecast for the fiscal year to $5.94, up from $5.90, while maintaining the upper end at $6.

Strategic Investments and Market Expansion

In a bid to solidify its market position, Medtronic revealed an $80 million investment in heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute its robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States. CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the complementary nature of Cornerstone's Sentire device to Medtronic's Hugo system, emphasizing the potential in emerging markets where soft tissue robotic surgery penetration is currently less than 1%.

Financial Performance and Market Outlook

Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was significantly bolstered by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% surge, driven by its application in treating irregular heart rhythms. Overall, the company posted an adjusted quarterly per share profit of $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Medtronic’s Chief Financial Officer Thierry Pieton noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into future projections. The firm's strategic focus remains on high-growth segments within the medical technology landscape, targeting substantial market opportunities and large patient populations.
