AI Summary

Medtronic boosts its fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by robust demand for heart devices and strategic investments.

Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial forecasts upward, citing strong demand for heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The medical technology giant announced an increase in its annual organic revenue growth projection to between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from the previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%.

Heart Device Demand Fuels Growth

The company's decision follows a notable surge in the adoption of its cardiovascular products, particularly in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an 88% growth. This portfolio, designed to treat irregular heart rhythms, contributed significantly to the 19.5% increase in sales within Medtronic's cardiovascular segment, reaching $3.93 billion.

Medtronic CEO Geoff Martha attributed the improved outlook not only to the current quarter's performance but also to the broad success across various business sectors and the emerging contributions from new growth platforms. The company raised the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast for fiscal 2027 to $5.94, maintaining the upper limit at $6.

Strategic Investments and Market Expansion

In addition to revising its forecasts, Medtronic announced strategic investments aimed at bolstering its market position. The company plans to invest $80 million in heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select international markets.

Martha highlighted the potential of robotic surgery in emerging markets, noting that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery remains below 1% in these regions. He emphasized that Cornerstone's Sentire device complements Medtronic's existing Hugo system, expanding the company's footprint in the robotics sector.

Financial Performance and Market Strategy

Medtronic reported an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG data. The company's Chief Financial Officer, Thierry Pieton, mentioned that recent tariff refunds nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, although future refunds have not been included in the financial outlook.

Looking ahead, Medtronic continues to prioritize high-growth segments within the medtech industry, focusing on large patient pools and expansive market segments. "We've maintained a steady cadence of mergers and acquisitions, aiming at sectors where we foresee substantial growth potential," Martha stated.
