Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts on Heart Device Surge

Medtronic expects stronger revenue growth in 2027, driven by high demand for heart devices.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 forecasts upward, citing increased demand for its cardiovascular devices. The company announced that it now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from its previous projection of 6.75% to 7.25%. This change reflects the company's confidence in the strong performance across its business segments and rising contributions from new growth platforms.
Strategic Investments in Heart and Robotic Technologies
Alongside its revised forecasts, Medtronic has announced a significant investment strategy. The company will invest $80 million in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device manufacturer, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device outside the U.S. This move aims to enhance Medtronic's presence in the emerging market for soft tissue robotic surgery, which CEO Geoff Martha highlighted as having less than 1% penetration.
"We've had a steady cadence of M&A," said Martha, emphasizing the focus on high-growth segments with large patient pools. The investment in Cornerstone's Sentire device is seen as complementary to Medtronic's existing Hugo device.
Strong Financial Performance
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by the pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an impressive 88% increase. The company reported an adjusted quarterly per share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG-compiled data.
During the quarter, Medtronic also benefited from tariff refunds that offset the duties paid, though these refunds are not factored into future forecasts. The company has raised the lower end of its adjusted per share profit forecast for fiscal 2027 to $5.94 from $5.90, keeping the upper end at $6.
Medtronic's strategic moves and robust financial performance underscore its commitment to maintaining a leading position in the medical technology sector. With continued investments in high-growth areas, the company is poised to capitalize on the increasing demand for advanced cardiovascular and robotic surgical solutions.
