Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts, Invests in Heart Device Firms

Medtronic boosts 2027 revenue forecasts amid strong heart device demand, invests in Pi-Cardia and Cornerstone Robotics.
Medtronic, a leader in medical technology, has adjusted its fiscal 2027 forecasts upward, driven by increasing demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, surpassing its previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%. The adjusted per-share profit forecast's lower end has also been raised to $5.94 from $5.90, with the upper limit remaining at $6.
Strategic Investments in Pi-Cardia and Cornerstone Robotics
In a strategic move, Medtronic announced a substantial $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device company, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States. This investment aligns with Medtronic CEO Geoff Martha's strategy to focus on high-growth segments within the medtech industry.
Martha noted the complementary nature of Cornerstone's Sentire device to Medtronic's existing Hugo device, emphasizing the potential growth in emerging markets where soft tissue robotic surgery penetration is currently below 1%.
Strong Performance in Cardiovascular Segment
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment has seen a remarkable 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth is largely attributed to the success of its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an impressive 88% increase. The company reported an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, exceeding analyst expectations of $1.39 on $9.55 billion, according to LSEG-compiled data.
The company's Chief Financial Officer, Thierry Pieton, mentioned that Medtronic received tariff refunds that nearly covered the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into the company's future outlook.
Martha highlighted the company's consistent merger and acquisition activities, prioritizing segments with large patient pools and high growth potential. "We have confidence in these segments becoming major areas within medtech," he stated.
