Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Surging Heart Device Demand

Medtronic boosts fiscal 2027 forecasts, fueled by strong heart device sales and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 revenue growth outlook upward, driven by increasing demand for its cardiovascular devices. The company has also adjusted the lower end of its profit forecast, reflecting confidence in its expanding product range and market presence.
Investment in Heart Devices and Robotics
In a strategic move, Medtronic has committed $80 million to heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets. CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the complementary nature of Cornerstone's Sentire device to Medtronic's existing Hugo platform, particularly in emerging markets where soft tissue robotic surgery penetration remains below 1%.
Financial Performance and Growth Projections
Medtronic's updated forecast now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from the previous 6.75% to 7.25% range. The company's adjusted per-share profit forecast has been increased to $5.94 from $5.90, while maintaining the upper limit at $6. Quarterly sales in Medtronic's cardiovascular segment surged by 19.5% to $3.93 billion, largely propelled by an 88% growth in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which is used in treating irregular heart rhythms.
During a post-earnings call, CEO Martha highlighted the breadth of performance across Medtronic's businesses and the increasing contributions from new growth platforms as key factors in the company's optimistic outlook. CFO Thierry Pieton noted that recent tariff refunds nearly offset the duties incurred during the quarter, though future refunds have not been factored into the company's projections.
Strategic Focus on High-Growth Segments
Medtronic's strategic investments underscore its focus on high-growth segments within the medtech industry. Martha indicated that the company is prioritizing areas with substantial patient pools and growth potential. The company's proactive approach is reflected in its robust quarterly results, with an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst estimates of $1.39 on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG data.
