Medtronic Raises 2027 Forecasts Amid Surging Heart Device Demand

Medtronic hikes fiscal 2027 projections, driven by robust demand for cardiovascular devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial outlook upward, citing increased demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The medical technology giant now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, a boost from its previous forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%. This adjustment reflects the company's confidence in its expanding product portfolio and market reach.
Strategic Investments in Cardiac and Robotic Technologies
In a move to strengthen its position in the cardiovascular sector, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a company specializing in heart-valve repair devices, with an option to fully acquire the firm for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.
CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the strategic importance of these investments, noting that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in emerging markets remains below 1%. He emphasized the complementary nature of Cornerstone's Sentire device to Medtronic's existing Hugo robotic platform.
Strong Financial Performance in Cardiovascular Segment
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was significantly driven by the company's pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw a remarkable 88% growth, underscoring the rising demand for solutions addressing irregular heart rhythms.
The company's financial performance exceeded market expectations, with an adjusted quarterly per share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion. These results surpassed analysts' estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Financial Strategy and Market Outlook
Thierry Pieton, Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer, mentioned that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, future refunds have not been factored into the company's financial outlook.
Medtronic's strategic focus remains on high-growth segments of the medical technology industry, with an emphasis on large patient pools and significant market opportunities. CEO Martha reiterated the company's commitment to maintaining a steady pace of mergers and acquisitions to bolster its growth trajectory.
