AI Summary

Medtronic boosts 2027 revenue forecasts, driven by high demand for heart devices and strategic investments in medical technology.

Medtronic has elevated its fiscal 2027 revenue and profit projections, attributing the adjustments to a robust demand for its cardiovascular devices. The company anticipates an annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from its previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%. It also increased the lower end of its adjusted per share profit forecast from $5.90 to $5.94, maintaining the upper limit at $6.

Strategic Investments and Acquisitions

In a move to strengthen its market position, Medtronic announced a significant investment of $80 million in Pi-Cardia, a company specializing in heart-valve repair devices. The deal includes an option to acquire Pi-Cardia for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in several international markets. CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the strategic importance of these investments, particularly noting the low penetration of robotic surgery in emerging markets.

Cardiovascular Segment Performance

The company's cardiovascular segment reported a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was spearheaded by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an impressive 88% surge. These devices are increasingly utilized in complex cardiovascular procedures, reflecting a broader industry trend toward advanced surgical technologies.

Medtronic's quarterly performance exceeded expectations, with an adjusted per share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst forecasts of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in revenue, as compiled by LSEG data.

Financial and Market Outlook

Despite receiving tariff refunds that nearly offset its duties for the quarter, Medtronic's finance chief Thierry Pieton noted that future refunds have not been included in the company's outlook. The company's strategic focus remains on high-growth segments within the medical technology sector, with an emphasis on large patient pools and significant market opportunities.

Geoff Martha emphasized the breadth of Medtronic's performance across its business units as a key driver of confidence in the company's future growth. The CEO reiterated the company's commitment to investing in segments that promise not only rapid growth but also substantial market size.
